The literary world is full of brilliant writers who are just as guilty of failing to live up to their potential as anyone else.
Here are a few tips on what you should never, ever, ever say to your writing: 1.
Don’t just say, ‘I’m so good at this’.
What does that even mean?
Don’t say it, but be honest.
It doesn’t mean you are perfect.
You might be great at your craft, but you are probably not a genius.
You can’t just be that great, because it is not possible.
If you have a brilliant idea, then do it.
But if you don’t, then be open to criticism.
Never, ever lie.
That’s not the same as being a liar, and it is definitely not the right way to say, “I’m good at something”.
Always be looking for new ways to improve.
Do not just take your ideas and run with it.
Do it with the intention of improving them, and you can do this.
The world has changed so much in the last few years, and there are so many more opportunities for writers to make a difference.
If someone tells you they are brilliant, just say it.
This is the only time you can be honest with yourself.
They are not.
You should never lie to yourself.
When in doubt, just take a deep breath.
You have to believe that you are great at something.
When you are writing, you should always think ahead.
You do not need to start writing tomorrow.
Never make excuses for yourself.
Do you really need to write that letter about the car you bought today, or that piece of advice about how to find the perfect job?
That will never be good enough.
When it comes to your career, you can’t have it all.
It is just a starting point.
Don, not me, you will be fine.
Never give up.
There is no way you can quit when you are so good.
It’s never going to be easy.
When writing, don’t ever take your eyes off the prize.
There are always better opportunities to improve, and if you are lucky enough to have one of those opportunities, you are already doing better than most.
When doing research, make sure you ask the right questions.
It will help you understand what your peers are saying.
You are a genius at something, and the more you practice, the better you will get.
Never be afraid to fail.
You will never succeed, but it is okay.
Do whatever you can to be successful in life.
It won’t make you great, but if you do what you can, you might be better off.
It isn’t easy to get the most out of yourself, so don’t give up!
If it comes down to it, it’s not about who is better at something than you, it is about what you do.
If your work is good, it will stand the test of time.
If not, then it is time to move on.
